Mechanical properties are of primary importance when aggregate materials are to be used in road building. A material’s resistance to fragmentation and resistance to wear determine how long the structural integrity of a road will last. These mechanical properties are less important, however, if the aggregate materials used is concrete ballast. Instead, the mineralogical composition, particle size distribution and radioactive levels carry a greater weight. Crushed rock that is to be used as building infill must also be tested to avoid problems with high radon levels or unacceptable radioactivity.
